The FEAR of the LORD.
What does it mean to Fear
the LORD?
“Behold, the fear of the
LORD, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28).
“The secret of the LORD is
with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant. Like as a father
pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth
our frame; he remembereth that we are dust” (Psalms 25:14, 103:13-14).
“The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of wisdom: and the knowledge of the holy is understanding” (Proverbs
9:10).
“The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction” (Proverbs
1:7).
“The fear of the LORD is the
beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his
commandments: his praise endureth forever” (Psalm 111:10).
“The fear of the LORD is to
hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I
hate” (Proverbs 7:13).
“The fear of the LORD
tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be
visited with evil” (Proverbs 19:23).
“By mercy and truth iniquity
is purged: and by the fear of the LORD men depart from evil” (Proverbs 16:6).
“It is good that thou
shouldest take hold of this; yea, also from this withdraw not thine hand: for
he that feareth God shall come forth of them all” (Ecclesiastes 7:18).
“Let not thine heart envy
sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long” (Proverbs
23:17).
“Who is among you that
feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in
darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay
upon his God” (Isaiah 50:10).
For those who refuse to
choose the fear of the LORD the word of God says:
“When your fear cometh as
desolation and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and
anguish cometh upon you. Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer;
they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me. For that they hated
knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD” (Proverbs 1:27–28).
“The
fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death”
(Proverbs 14:27).
