There is only one FATHER!
Anyone in a church calling a
priest, preacher or other with the title ‘father’ or “Father” so and so must
cease doing so because Jesus specifically expressed to “…call no man father
upon earth for one is your Father, which is in heaven” (Matthew 23:9). Let us
be reminded of our Lord’s Prayer: “Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be
thy name” (Matthew 6:10).
When Jesus’ disciples wanted
to know who among them would be the leader, he provided an answer by drawing a
comparison of the religious practices of that day which more so prevalent in
our generation. Jesus spoke to his disciples, saying:
“But all their works they do
for to be seen of men; they make broad their phylacteries, and enlarge the
borders of their garments, and love the uppermost rooms at feasts, and the
chief seats in the synagogues, and greetings in the markets, and to be called
of men, Rabbi, Rabbi. But be not ye called Rabbi: for one is your Master, even
Christ; and all ye are brethren. And call no man your father upon the earth:
for one is your Father, which is in heaven” (Matthew 23:5–9).
