Peace in Jerusalem?
Why will there never be lasting
peace in Jerusalem?
God made a covenant with Abraham
saying: “Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the
great river, the river Euphrates: The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the
Kadmonites, and the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims, and the
Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites” (Genesis
15:18-21).
Furthermore, in later generations
God commanded Moses and then Joshua to drive our all these nations. However, all
these nations could not be driven out because the generation of the children of
Israel after Joshua’s death soon forgot their covenant with God that they must
not mingle with the people of these nations and to served their gods. As a
result the angel of God reminded them of the word of God as spoken by Joshua
before his death. As a consequence of the rebellion of the children of Israel
God did not drive out all the nations as he promised their fathers with the
covenant made with Abraham.
“And the anger of the LORD was hot
against Israel; and he said, because that this people hath transgressed my
covenant which I commanded their fathers, and have not hearkened unto my voice;
I also will not henceforth drive out any from before them of the nations which
Joshua left when he died” (Judges 2:20-21).
The nations which remained that
lived among the children of Israel were the Canaanites, Hittites, and Amorites,
and Perizzites, and Hivites, and Jebusites (Judges 3:5). Today, many countries
lay claim to Jerusalem, and after years of peace negotiations, there has not
been any resolution. Many people hope that one day there will be lasting peace
in Jerusalem. However, by the word of God there will never be lasting peace. In
time past, the word of God came unto the prophet Ezekiel saying:
“Son of man, prophesy against the
prophets of Israel that prophesy, and say thou unto them that prophesy out of
their own hearts; ‘Hear ye the word of the LORD; thus saith the LORD God; woe
unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing.
To wit, the prophets of Israel which prophesy concerning Jerusalem, [AND WHICH
SEE VISIONS OF PEACE FOR HER, AND THERE IS NO PEACE],’ saith the LORD God”
(Ezekiel 13:2–3, 16).
