Living by GOD’S COMMANDMENTS.
Many people incorrectly believe that being under grace means that we are
not to abide by God’s commandments. When a young lawyer came to Jesus and asked
him a question, tempting him, saying:
“Master, which is the great commandment in the law? Jesus said unto him,
‘[THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL,
AND WITH ALL THY MIND. THIS IS THE FIRST AND GREAT COMMANDMENT]. And the second
is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two
commandments hang all the law and the prophets” (Matthew 22:36-40).
When a young man wanted to know what he must do to inherit eternal life,
Jesus answered: “If thou wilt enter into life, keep the commandments” (Matthew
19:17). The young man then wanted to know which commandments.
“Jesus said, ‘Thou shalt do no murder, Thou shalt not commit adultery,
Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Honour thy father and
thy mother: and, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself” (Matthew 18-23).
Jesus told his disciples saying: “If ye love me, keep my commandments.
He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he
that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will
manifest myself to him” (John 14:15, 21).
The Apostle Paul, the apostle to the Gentiles further explained about God’s
commandments when he said: “[OWE NO MAN ANY THING, BUT TO LOVE ONE ANOTHER: FOR
HE THAT LOVETH ANOTHER HATH FULFILLED THE LAW].
For this, Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou
shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet; and
if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended in this saying,
namely, [THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF].
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore [LOVE IS THE FULFILLING
OF THE LAW]” (Romans 13:8-10).
“For
I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I
magnify mine office” (Romans 11:13).
