Our Lord Jesus explains doing the COMMANDMENTS OF GOD (Matthew 5:17-18, 18:23, 19:17, 22:34-40) (Revelation 22:13-14).
When our Lord Jesus was here on earth at many points in time the Scribes,
Pharisees and Sadducees doubted that he was the Son of God, and often tried to
discredit him. Notably a lawyer came to him asking:
‘Master, which is the great commandment in the law?’
Jesus said unto him, ‘[THOU SHALT LOVE THE LORD THY GOD WITH ALL THY
HEART, AND WITH ALL THY SOUL, AND WITH ALL THY MIND].’
This is the [FIRST AND GREAT COMMANDMENT]. And the second is like unto it, [THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF]. [ON THESE TWO COMMANDMENTS HANG ALL THE LAW AND THE PROPHETS]” (Matthew 22:34-40).
Our Lord Jesus was very clear when he said: “¶ Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled” (Matthew 5:17-18).
Furthermore, when a young man wanted to know what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus answered: “[IF THOU WILT ENTER INTO LIFE, KEEP THE COMMANDMENTS]” (Matthew 19:17). The young man then wanted to know which commandments.
“Jesus
said, ‘[THOU SHALT DO NO MURDER, THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, THOU SHALT NOT
STEAL, THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, HONOUR THY FATHER AND THY MOTHER:
AND, THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF]” (Matthew 18-23).
Our
Lord Jesus Christ chose Paul, whose name was Saul to be the apostle to the
Gentiles (Acts 9:1-15): “For
I speak to you Gentiles, inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles, I
magnify mine office” (Romans 11:13), echoed the keeping of these commandments
when he said:
“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: [FOR
HE THAT LOVETH ANOTHER HATH FULFILLED THE LAW].
For this, [THOU SHALT NOT COMMIT ADULTERY, THOU SHALT
NOT KILL, THOU SHALT NOT STEAL, THOU SHALT NOT BEAR FALSE WITNESS, THOU SHALT
NOT COVET]; and if there be any other commandment, it is briefly comprehended
in this saying, namely, [THOU SHALT LOVE THY NEIGHBOUR AS THYSELF].
Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore [LOVE
IS THE FULFILLING OF THE LAW]” (Romans 13:8-10).
“I
am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. [BLESSED
ARE THEY THAT DO HIS COMMANDMENTS, THAT THEY MAY HAVE RIGHT TO THE TREE OF
LIFE, AND MAY ENTER IN THROUGH THE GATES INTO THE CITY]” (Revelation 22:13-14).
“I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star” (Revelation 22:16).
“He which
testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord
Jesus. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen” (Revelation
22:20-21).
